MGM singer and actress Gloria DeHaven died this year at 91, one of the relentless wave of entertainment deaths we have endured in 2016. I adore this photo of her with my great-grandmother Ida Mayer Cummings being told where to work the room as a ‘cigarette girl’ for one Ida’s many fundraising events for the Los Angeles Jewish Home for the Aged, as it was then known.
It seems hard to imagine now, but these were huge affairs that attracted a very glamorous and influential crowd. Stars of all kinds gave their time and money in ways that I really don’t think we see today, other than maybe in the political and environmental sphere. You rarely hear of a current star involved at a grassroots level in charitable works. Times have changed…
